Caring for Your Elegant Wedding Dress Before and After the Wedding

Before the Wedding: Storage and Transport

Once your dress is ready, proper storage is essential to keep it in perfect condition. Hang it in a breathable garment bag away from direct sunlight, humidity, and strong odours. Avoid folding the dress if possible, as creases in satin or silk can be difficult to remove. If space is limited, loosely fold the dress with acid-free tissue paper between the layers.

When transporting your dress to the venue, lay it flat or hang it in the car. If you’re travelling by air, contact the airline in advance to arrange hanging space in the cabin. Some brides opt to have their dress shipped to the venue ahead of time using a specialist bridal courier service.

Day-of Care

On the morning of your wedding, steam the dress gently to remove any wrinkles from transport. Avoid using a hot iron directly on delicate fabrics — a handheld steamer on a low setting is safer and more effective. Have a trusted friend or bridesmaid help you dress to avoid snagging or staining the fabric.

Keep a small emergency kit handy with essentials such as a stain remover pen, safety pins, and double-sided tape. These can address minor issues quickly without panic. If you’re having photos taken outdoors, be mindful of where you walk and consider having someone hold your train to keep it clean.

After the Wedding: Cleaning and Preservation

Have your dress professionally cleaned as soon as possible after the wedding. Stains from food, drink, dirt, or makeup set over time and become harder to remove. Look for a dry cleaner that specialises in bridal gowns, as they’ll understand the fabrics and construction involved.

Once cleaned, consider having your dress professionally preserved. This involves boxing the gown in acid-free tissue and a sealed container to prevent yellowing and fabric degradation. A preserved gown can last for decades and may be worn again, altered for another occasion, or passed on to future generations.
